The Museum of Lake Minnetonka

The Museum of Lake Minnetonka is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which has served the Twin Cities area with a unique, historical experience since incorporating in 2004. As one of the only “living history” museums in the region, our mission is to preserve Lake Minnetonka’s history through acquiring, restoring, and presenting items that help tell the story of the lake’s colorful past.

Originally beginning in 1990 as the "Steamboat Division" of the Minnesota Transportation Museum, the MLM’s efforts have primarily focused on operating and maintaining the historic Steamboat Minnehaha. In addition to the Minnehaha, however, the MLM has begun to maintain a collection of historical documents, photographs, and artifacts which are housed in the Museum’s archives. Although it is not a museum in the traditional sense, we also share a welcome center with the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber of Commerce where books, prints, and memorabilia are available for purchase.

As an all-volunteer, member-based organization, the MLM wholeheartedly thanks the members and volunteers who make our efforts possible. With the help of all our supporters, we are determined to preserve and promote awareness for the history of Lake Minnetonka for generations to come.
